Step 1 — Read the transmission PTO pad
Never select a PTO family from the vehicle model. Read the transmission data plate, then confirm the mounting pad on the gearbox: hole count, hole spacing and shaft interface. This single step eliminates most ordering errors.
Step 2 — Size by torque, not by habit
Torque requirement comes from the pump: displacement multiplied by working pressure, converted to rotating torque. Sustained circuits need more headroom than short-cycle ones because heat accumulation, not peak load, is what shortens PTO life.

Step 3 — Confirm the output interface
Direct-mount units hold the pump on the PTO flange and are the cleanest installation. Shaft-output units drive a remote pump through a driveline. The output interface must match your pump flange, both in pattern and in drive type.
Step 4 — Check the installation envelope
The heavier family has a larger housing. Before committing, verify clearance to the chassis rail, crossmembers, exhaust and any aftertreatment components. Also confirm the transmission provides adequate lubrication at the PTO port.

Can a 1000 series PTO replace a 2000 series unit?

Not exactly. The series tells you the family — mounting, housing size and general torque class. The precise rating depends on the specific variant and its configuration, so always confirm against the exact model code.
Is an 8-bolt PTO always the heavier series?
Bolt count is a strong indicator of the pad family, and larger patterns generally go with heavier units, but bolt count alone is not a specification. Confirm hole spacing and shaft interface as well.
What if my transmission has no PTO opening?
Then a transmission-mounted PTO is not the answer. Check whether the transmission offers a PTO provision as an option, or whether the application should use an engine-driven or split-shaft arrangement instead.
How long should a PTO last?
